Records Request Frustration

I have been waiting, impatiently, for the information that I sent for on the immigration of 4 of my ancestors from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. I finally went back the web site and took another look to see what their time line was. From the details on the web site it could take up to 90 days to complete your request. I made the request October 10, 2009. It was, at the time January 4, 2010, 85 days into my requests, when I decided to send off a request for information on where my 4 requests stood. From the details on the web site it was ok to send and ask about your requests, or you could call.

Off went the email with all of the details on which requests belonged to me, asking for an update on the status. On January 8, 2010 I received a reply telling me that it can take up to 90 days to complete a request and that they are processed in the order in which they are received. They also stated that they were currently working on requests received during the beginning of October, and that orders cannot be expedited. I didn’t ask for any of them to be expedited, just an update. They also added, if I have any other questions I can call or re-email to the same address. I am not sure what other question I would have at this point; I don’t have the documents yet.

January 9, 2010 was the 90th day, so much for up to 90 days. I believe October 10th is in the beginning of the month of October, so with luck they are at least working on the requests. This is the longest I have ever had to wait on returned information. When making requests for Civil War records, you can count on them coming back under 60 days. Requests for death information take about the 60 days also. I can only hope at this point that a huge pile of papers will come thumping down on my porch in the NEXT 90 days.
